Build Your Own Palette

First, get your basics…

Here are the three paint colors I will emphasize as “primary” in my Color Course.

One 15ml tube will fill ten half pans; a 5ml tube will fill three half pans. One half pan is usually sufficient for one student.

15 ml. Hansa Yellow Light

This will be your “primary” yellow.

15 ml. Phthalo Blue (Green Shade)

This will be your “primary” cyan.

15 ml. Quinacridone Pink

This will be your “primary” magenta.

You can stick with these 3 primaries, but you’ll get even more out of the course if you have some variety.

Adding a pre-made split primary set, or choosing your own additional colors below will expand your palette appropriately.

Customize your own additions:

Reds:

Choose one of these warm reds:

5ml. Organic Vermilion

This paint color is a very vibrant “warm red.”

5ml. Pyrrol Red

One might call it “fire engine.”

Now, choose one of these cool reds:

5ml. Alizarin Crimson

A classic color for any palette!

5ml. Permanent Carmine

A blushy pinkish red that produces a consistent wash of color.

Blues:

Get one tube of French Ultramarine and one of Prussian Blue:

5 ml. French Ultramarine

A classic blue generally considered “warm.”

5 ml. Prussian Blue

A generally cooler blue than Ultramarine.

Yellow & Green:

Get one tube of New Gamboge and one of Sap Green:

5ml. New Gamboge

A beautiful, sunny golden yellow. Guaranteed to put pep in your step.

5 ml. Sap Green

“It’s like a warm hug.”

What about brown and black, you say?

You’ll love having these two convenient colors in your palette:

5 ml. Burnt Sienna

You really can’t ever go wrong with Burnt Sienna—you’ll find it to be extremely convenient!

5 ml. Payne’s Grey

We’ll talk about black in my course. For now, try using this dark grey for shadows, if that’s what you’re going for.

Infinity and beyond…

Here are some other colors you may want to include, if your budget allows:
